History
Established in 1730 as Narragansett Number 5 to benefit soldiers who fought against the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island, NN5 languished. Even 20 years later, little had been done with the land and it was eventually re-granted first as Souhegan East, then as Bedford in 1750. Named after the fourth Duke of Bedford, Lord John Russell, the town’s first moderator was Major John Goffe, the son of the man after whom Goffstown was named.
